Earlier this week Simon Clarke showed my visit to the colossal new Woodsmith Mine. A really important part of the project is being delivered at #LockwoodBeck in East Cleveland – you’ll have seen it if you’re driving by on the A171. The ten million tonnes of polyhalite produced at the mine every year when it hits full production will be transported deep underground on a conveyor-belt running all the way to the Redcar Bulk Terminal. The journey time for the 37km trip will be just four hours.
That tunnel is going to be dug from three points – the mine itself, the port and from a section starting in the middle here at Lockwood. Once the mining is complete, the Lockwood Beck site will represent an emergency exit from the tunnel itself. I met Jason, who is running this part of the project, to hear about what the work here entails.

Once completed, the site will be landscaped and barely visible from the road.
