You can't monitor your children every hour of the day. When you're busy at work or home, you want to be sure that they're safe from harm. But as children spend more time online, and have access to more devices, it's harder than ever to know what they're up to. Increasing numbers are viewing inappropriate material online, whether it's younger children accidentally stumbling across it, or older children accessing hardcore or violent films and images. We need to take action to stop this, so Prime Minister David Cameron has worked with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide Family Friendly Filters to protect our children online.
The Prime Minister and ISPs have worked together to ensure:
- For new customers (those buying an internet connection for the first time or switching supplier), family friendly content filters will be automatically installed for the whole home network unless an adult chooses not to install them. This will be in place by the end of the year and will apply for the whole home, and not just for each device.
- All existing customers will be given a choice about installing filters by the end of 2014. Again, the 'yes' option will be pre-selected and the decision can only be made by an adult.
